Tough matchup for the Cards in Game 4 of the World Series tonight as hard throwing lefty Derek Holland goes 8 1/3 and shuts them out.
Followup to my previous post about Sportsman’s Park last week before Game 1
Found a great Living St. Louis piece on youtube about Sportsman’s Park. It talks about the Cardinals and Browns, of course, but goes into detail about the neighborhood, the streetcars, the atmosphere of the park, and even the knot hole gang. There is lots of great footage of the park, the neighborhood, and especially Stan Musial.
Also caught a great story on FSM the other night about a pitcher named Blackie Schwamb that pitched for the St. Louis Browns for one season before getting so caught up in his own alcoholism and organized crime that he spiraled out of control. He was convicted of murder and became known as the greatest prison league pitcher of all time. It turned out that when Blackie wasn’t drunk he was completely unhittable and most of his contemporaries thought he would have dominated the MLB just as he did the prison league. It was a series called “Amazing Sports Stories” that aired on Fox Sports Midwest.
