Kirkwood

Kirkwood is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis City. It was the first planned suburb west of the Mississippi when it was founded in 1853 and named for the owner of The Pacific Railroad that ran through town. Kirkwood is bounded roughly by Berry Rd on the east, I-44 on the South, Des Peres Rd on the west, and the Village of Huntleigh as well as Warson Woods on the north. These areas are located just north of Manchester Rd. Kirkwood’s housing stock ranges widely from condos and homes near the $100,000 mark up to multi million dollar historic homes and new construction mansions. Almost every style of home and price range is available in Kirkwood from small bungalows to 6 bedroom homes.

Kirkwood is primarily a residential area with some commercial present in Old Kirkwood along Kirkwood Rd. Kirkwood Rd, which bisects Kirkwood from north to south, has a turn of the century small town feel with shops and restaurants in every storefront. Its a destination area for restaurants and nightlife for people that live in Kirkwood and the surrounding municipalities.

Kirkwood is one of the most centrally located and well established suburbs in the St. Louis area. For this reason it is highly desirable for people want to live within 10 minutes of both Downtown St. Louis and Downtown Clayton which are the business hubs of the area. Kirkwood is also surrounded by other wealthy and well established suburbs such as Frontenac, Glendale, Webster Groves, Sunset Hills, Warson Woods, and The Village of Huntleigh.

Kirkwood’s school district is respected and regarded as one of the best in the area. There are several known cultural attractions that Kirkwood is particularly known for. The historic railroad station has been converted in to shopping and restaurants that are frequented by people from all over the area that come to enjoy the both the shops and the historic charm of the station itself. Kirkwood is also home to The Magic House, which is a staple field trip for all children that grow up in St. Louis. The Magic House blends fun and science creating a great atmosphere in a historic building on Kirkwood Rd.
