Tower Grove Heights
Tower Grove Heights is a small area in south St. Louis that lies inside the larger Tower Grove South Neighborhood just south of Tower Grove Park. The area comprises 12 square blocks bounded on the south by McDonald, north by Arsenal, east by Grand, and west by Gustine. The neighborhood consists mostly of brick 2.5 story single family and 2 to 4 family flats that were built between 1900 and 1915. The buildings have stark and simple exterior detail often consisting of arches and decorative brick with a focus on the buildings entrance like much of the architecture in the surrounding neighborhoods. The interiors are often adorned with all the original details including hardwood floors, natural trim and casing, builtins, pocket doors, and stained glass. Home in the neighborhood range from under $100,000 to $500,000 or more for a mansion on Utah Place.
Something that sets Tower Grove Heights apart from other surrounding neighborhoods is that it has been consistently occupied and invested in since these homes were built over a
century ago. Most other surrounding neighborhoods have seen a degree of abandonment and decay that Tower Grove Heights has not been subject to. For this the neighborhood is indebted in large part to is location and beautiful architecture. Many older residents have lived their entire lives. Take a stroll down the wide tree lined boulevard that is Utah Place and glance east and west at the mansions fill every lot and its easy to see why many never left. This is not to say that Tower Grove Heights didn’t deal with the problems of white flight and urban decay that other city neighborhoods have had to deal with. Tower Grove Heights had rough times in the 1970’s and 1980’s as well. But thanks to a strong neighborhood association the problems were kept to a minimum in the neighborhood. The Tower Grove Heights Neighborhood association maintains a strong presence in the neighborhood today. The organization serves to address the needs and concerns of residents, oversee potential development, and raise money for neighborhood improvements.

Tower Grove Heights consistent position as a desirable neighborhood rests mostly on its unique location in the middle of an urban oasis. Tower Grove Heights borders Tower Grove Park on the south side and residents of the neighborhood use the park as their own personal playground and backyard. On any give day year round you can see neighborhood residents jogging, walking their dogs, or partaking in a kickball or softball game. The park also host cultural events and festivals year round celebrating food, music, and art constantly. Also within walking distance is the Missouri Botanical Garden which is one of the finest in the country. The garden attracts visitor and residents alike daily that come to see the displays and enjoy music and cultural events as well. Between Tower Grove Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden the residents of Tower Grove Heights are treated to a complex of green space that is rivaled by few urban areas anywhere in the country.
The more recent development that really adds to the livability and walkability of Tower Grove Heights is the explosion of shops and restaurants that have taken root on South Grand between Arsenal heading south to Gravois and beyond. The South Grand strip borders Tower Grove Heights on the east side and has a decidedly international flavor. South Grand is home to some of the finest Vietnamese, Thai, and Mediterranean food that St. Louis has to offer. There are also neighborhood favorites such as City Diner and Mokabee’s Coffee. There is such a variety that could try a different flavor every day of the week and never have to get in your car to do it!
